El primer maratón fue para el 25 de septiembre del 1977 con cerca de unos 4,200 corredores y la inscripción para la misma tenía un costo solo de $5.00 esta carrera se ha convertido en una de las más populares a nivel mundial solo siendo superada por los maratones de New York, Boston, Berlin y Tokyo la cual recibe a corredores y espectadores de más de 100 países. Como ya los hermanos Africanos nos tienen acostumbrado a mostrarnos que siguen siendo dominantes en estas carreras de larga distancia no nos defraudaron ya que las primeras tres posiciones tanto en la rama masculina como en la femenina la coparon los "Kenyanos" el primero en pasar por el arco final lo fue Abel Kirui con un tiempo de 2:11:23 muy seguido de su compatriota Dickson Chumba con 2:11:26 y tercero fue Gideon Kipketer con 2:12:20 el primer Estadunidense en llegar lo fue Elkanan Kibet con tiempo de 2:16:30 ocupando la décima posición. En la rama femenina las ganadoras lo fueron las Kenyanas Florence Kiplagat con tiempo de 2:21:32 seguida de Edna Kiplagat con 2:23:28 y tercera Valentine Kipketer con 2:23:41, la primera Estadunidense en llegar lo fue Serena Burla con tiempo de 2:30:40 y ocupando la séptima posición. Para nosotros al igual que para los corredores la carrera fue algo más que un reto pues tratamos de poder llegar a diferentes puntos para poder llevarles a través de nuestros lentes los mejores momentos utilizando en muchas ocasiones los trenes de la ciudad.
